Mindless Meanderings of a Curly Haired Girl

It's got all the right elements: dark comedy, a great female lead, and a bizarre storyline.

My High School Reunion by Megan Poledick

I will be the first to admit that I did not want to attend the five year high school reunion... that I almost laughed in my best friend's face when she said she was going... but then she convinced me that as her best friend, and voted "class inseperables" I was obligated to attend. So we called the other third of our tripod and convinced him to attend. I had a minor anxiety attack as I walked up the to the doors of our town's country club. Five years, no, that's not a long time... I know this... it was long enough that Jason Robert Brown wrote a whole musical about it though. And five years was long enough for me to lose 45 or so pounds. None of these people (minus my inseparable) had seen me in my new body.

As I walked in the door there weren't many people there. My whole class was only 97 people and by the end of the night maybe 35 had made an appearance... but it was early and only 15 or so were there. At one table sat all the dudes in my class... and i mean the dudes, all of them wearing the same basic button down shirt and jeans. I quickly figured out that you could tell what people were doing based on their attire. A collared shirt and jeans meant you had a degree in business and most likely you were working in finance. Anyway... one of the guys who I had been close with in elementary school said hello to me... I certainly thought that some of them weren't sure it was me right away... but I went over and sat down at their table and chatted with each of them.

It was awkward at first to find out where to begin when people asked "so what have you been up to?" But mostly people discussed what they were doing in their jobs and what was going on in post college life (for those who made it out alive).

Some people changed for the better, some for the worse. One guy showed up who left our school district after 8th grade... so it had been nearly 10 years since I had seen him... that was good and weird.

It was interesting to me to learn that the male half of our classes "Class Couple" had turned out to be gay... and it was interesting that none of our Class Superatlives had shown up except for myself, my best friend and our matching set of male best friends. For some, there was one half, but the other was missing... alas. The two sets of best friends had their pictures taken, so we could remember that even five years later we were still bff :)

It was odd to me at the very low attendance by the females in our class as well. I know that not everyone still lives around our town and there were circumstances beyond the control of others... but there were only 10 girls there... not very many at all... considering the girls pretty much ran the student council, activities board, etc etc. while we were in school.

I was able to reconnect with some people - found out that one of my buddies lives about two miles away from me and we're hoping to get together for drinks in the near future.

I am glad Brie made me go... because it was the most random funny event ever.
